We love it when our couples book an engagement session in addition to their wedding day coverage. Engagement sessions are not just an opportunity to get fabulous photos (of course!) but also give couples a chance to meet their photographer in person before the wedding day as most consultations are done over a phone call or on a Zoom or Facetime meeting. This in-person interaction has many benefits and we share some of those below.

The Magic of Engagement Photos
First, an engagement session allows the couple to experience what it’s like working with their photographer and being in front of the camera while concurrently allowing the photographer the opportunity to understand how the couple interacts – are they awkward? Shy? Silly? Sweet? Playful? Serious? Witnessing and working through surprises (like he always squints when he smiles, or she blinks every time the light fires) can go a long way to helping the photographer get amazing, and natural, photos of the couple both during the engagement session and then on their wedding day.

Second, the IRL interaction allows the photographer to get to know the couple on a more personal level. This builds trust and rapport that we believe helps reduce stress on the wedding day, and we are all about a low-stress wedding!

Third, who doesn’t love a reason to get dressed up and showcase the love? Yes, engagement sessions are a great excuse for this and we even recommend that couples turn engagement sessions into date nights! We discuss location, clothing, time of day, and vibe in order to create the best experience for the couple.

Last, many couples love using their engagement photos for things like save-the-date announcements, albums that double as a sign-in book, or even framed photos that can be displayed at the wedding. Engagement sessions with a professional photographer absolutely result in high-quality images that can be used for a variety of creative purposes on the wedding day and beyond!

The Copper Collective Engagement Sessions

The Copper Collective offers a wedding package that includes an additional shoot that can be used towards an engagement session. We encourage couples to book this package and use the additional shoot for engagement photos because it really is the best way to connect with our couples prior to a wedding day.

We understand that many of our bookings are “destination weddings” that are traveling here in San Diego and the surrounding areas for their big day, which can make the logistics of an engagement session a little more challenging for the couple. In these instances, we recommend the couples coordinate their engagement session around already existing wedding-planning trips, whether coming into town for a food tasting or venue visit. We are happy to try to accommodate and can typically line up a shoot during that same trip!

Ultimately, an engagement session is a great reason to get great photos that you can use and display for years to come, but also to help get to know your photographer, for your photographer to get to know you, and all to contribute to a hopefully lower-stress wedding day!
